The Van Damme Collection [Blu-ray]
picture
Features:-
Triple bill of cult action features starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. In 'Black Eagle' (1988), a top secret US tracking device goes missing when the F-111 fighter jet transporting it is shot out of the sky. The KGB, led by the infamous Andrei (Van Damme), have the upper hand in their race with the CIA to retrieve it, until the Americans level the playing field by enlisting the help of martial arts expert Ken Tani (Shô Kosugi), code-named the Black Eagle. In 'Lionheart' (1990), Van Damme stars as tough French legionnaire Lyon Gaultier, who goes absent without leave when his brother is fatally wounded during a botched drug deal. He travels to New York where he is soon making money for his brother's widow (Lisa Pelikan) and child (Ashley Johnson) as a bare-knuckle boxer. But the Foreign Legion is on his trail and his new boss Cynthia (Deborah Rennard) is soon taking bets on his forthcoming death. In 'Death Warrant' (1990), renegade cop Louis Burke (Van Damme) poses as a prison inmate in order to investigate a series of suspicious murders in the maximum-security Harrison Penitentiary in California. Burke must use his full arsenal of martial arts skills when he uncovers the truth about the killings and is forced to attempt a daring escape after his true identity is revealed to his fellow prisoners.Technical Specs: Languages(s): EnglishInteractive Menu

Bloodsport [DVD]
picture
Features:-
A well-oiled Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in Bloodsport, which may be one of the few kickboxing films to be based on a true story. The Muscles from Brussels plays Frank Dux, the first Westerner ever to win the extreme "whupfest" known as the Kumatai (a long-running, no-holds-barred fighting tournament in Hong Kong). While a bit deficient in the script department (to say the least), this undeniably exciting flick succeeds by letting Van Damme play to his strengths: namely, minimal acting and a lot of impossibly acrobatic splits while kicking people in the head. It's a guilty pleasure testosterone blast of the highest order, with a memorable villain (the massive Bolo Yeung from Enter the Dragon), and a multitude of well-choreographed fight scenes. An embarrassed-looking Forest Whitaker cameos as a hapless (and non-kickboxing) cop. --Andrew Wright

Universal Soldier [DVD]
picture
Features:-
Universal Soldier offered director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin their first venture before going on to make a mountain of money as the creators of Independence Day and Godzilla. Teaming up for this action flick disguised as a science fiction thriller, muscle hunks Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play embattled Vietnam soldiers who kill each other in combat. They are subsequently revived 25 years later as semi-android "UniSols" in a high-tech army of the near future. Their memories were supposedly wiped clean, but flashbacks occur to remind them of their bitter hatred (Lundgren committed wartime atrocities; Van Damme had tried to stop him) and the warriors resume their tenacious battle while a journalist (Ally Walker) uncovers the truth about the secret UniSol program. With energy to spare, the standard action sequences are adequate for anyone with a short attention span. And besides, with Van Damme and Lundgren in the lead roles, who needs dialogue? --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
