Geoff Hamilton's Practical Gardening Course
picture
Features:-
The late Geoff Hamilton was probably more than anybody else responsible for the current enthusiasm for amateur, domestic gardening in the UK. As the presenter for seventeen years of the television "Gardeners' World", his popularity and influence were immense. Straightforward in style and encyclopedic of knowledge, he was that type of ideal teacher who encourages by communicating a love of his subject. His Practical Gardening Course, first published in 1993 and now reissued in paperback, is described as "The Complete Book of Gardening Techniques"; and so it proves. It's a comprehensive, hands-on guide to the principles and practice of horticulture in small-to-medium sized gardens, clearly written and unintimidating in approach. Virtually every technique discussed is clearly illustrated by series of beautifully clear photographs, most of them featuring Hamilton hard at work.

Introductory chapters deal with broad topics such as plants (and how they grow), equipment, planning and landscaping, before moving on to the specifics of lawns, borders, water and vegetable gardens and growing plants in containers. The final chapters cover vegetables, herbs and fruit, and greenhouse and cold frame cultivation. While the emphasis is firmly on technique, Hamilton offers plentiful suggestions for different plants and varieties to suit all types of gardens, aspects and soils. If there is anyone who has't yet caught the gardening bug, this would be an ideal introduction. For experienced gardeners, too, it represents a fund of practical ideas. --Robin Davidson

Geoff Hamilton's Year in Your Garden
picture
Features:-
Geoff Hamilton, best known for the BBC's Gardeners' World died in 1996 and this compilation takes the best of his articles offering a calendar guide to tending your garden. Geoff takes us through the year month by month with an introduction to each chapter by his wife and fellow gardening enthusiast, Lynda Hamilton. Her tribute to his skills, love of organic gardening and description of their own garden in Barnsdale gives the book a touching personal edge.

The most useful part of each chapter is the key tasks list that details essential action for each particular month. January, for example, is the month for sowing in modules, taking cuttings from dormant perennials and shaping up young trees. Every type of plant is covered, from lawns and hedges to fruit. Visually the book picks up for spring, with photographs of suggested evergreens and flowers, accompanied by practical tips on subjects such as pruning, feeding and mulching.

Throughout the book Lynda recounts Geoff's gardening aphorisms, for example: "Gardening is half achievement and half optimism" that lend it a certain nostalgic charm. Trees, shrubs, fruit, vegetables and flowers are all given comprehensive coverage and a wide range of varieties and how best to propagate and care for them, are addressed.

Geoff Hamilton's Year in your Gardenis as much a tribute to Hamilton and his personality as it is a gardening care book, but the two complement each other and it succeeds on both levels, offering valuable practical advice and a snapshot into the life of this well-liked character. --Karen Homer

Motor Racing's Strangest Races: Extraordinary but true stories from over a century of motor racing (Strangest series)
picture
Features:-
Since 1894, when motor racing’s colourful history began with a bang (and a banger!), drivers, racers and lunatics alike have done many stupid and bizarre things all in the name of motor sport. Author Geoff Tibballs has gathered together this absorbing collection of stories from over a century of motor racing around the world, including the Frenchman who drove 25 miles in reverse, the Grand Prix in which the leading drivers were so far ahead that they stopped for a meal in the pits, the Le Mans 24-hour race won by a car patched up with chewing gum, and the driver who drank six bottles of champagne – virtually one per pit-stop – on the way to winning the Indianapolis 500. The stories in this book are bizarre, fascinating, hilarious, and, most importantly, true.

Revised, redesigned and updated for a new generation of petrolheads, this book contains enough extraordinary-but-true tales to drive anyone around the bend.
