English Garden
picture
Features:-
Gardening writer Ursula Buchan has combined forces with garden photographer Andrew Lawson to explore the English garden and capture its richness and diversity. Focusing on gardens that are open to visitors, she explains the historical trends and the work of garden makers of the past that have shaped the English gardens we see today.

With a wealth of outstanding examples, illustrated with 350 photographs, she describes many garden styles--formality, the landscape tradition, the Arts and Crafts style, the cottage garden and recent phenomena such as New Naturalism.

Colour, water, ornament and foreign influences are among the themes she considers, as well as such defining characteristics as the very English urge to grow flowers and the nation's love of roses.

Drought-Resistant Planting: Lessons From Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden
picture
Features:-

The story of how Beth Chatto created her gravel garden on 'possibly the driest, and the most windswept, piece of soil in England' has a message of hope for gardeners everywhere. At the outset she promised herself: 'This garden was not to be irrigated in times of drought. Once established the plants must fend for themselves or die.'

The results, eloquently described by the author and beautifully portrayed in Steven Wooster's specially commissioned photographs taken through the seasons, testify to the triumphant outcome of the adventure.

Showing how her principles can be applied on any scale, this book is an essential read for any gardener facing water shortages and poor soil. Rich with hard-won tips and expressed in Beth Chatto's matchless style, this is a gardening classic.

Gardening with Grasses
picture
Features:-
Ornamental grasses are among the most important plants used by garden designers. This book shows how to use them to transform a garden. Grasses lend an architectural quality to a garden; they provide texture, background interest and a year-round range of subtle colours. They are also highly versatile, hardy and reliable. Many are evergreen and some perform better in shade, particularly useful in awkward corners where other plants struggle. The distinctive appearance of grasses makes them invaluable in combinations with flowering annuals or textured perennials. A catalogue of over 150 varieties and cultivars gives details of the best ornamental grasses, sedges and bamboos for a wide range of garden situations.

A Year in the Life of Beth Chatto's Gardens
picture
Features:-
Beth Chatto was possibly the most influential British gardener of the second half of the twentieth century. When she started to make her garden on an overgrown area of wasteland in Essex in 1960 she was faced with a range of widely differing conditions, from drought-stricken gravel through woodland to dense, silty bog. Applying the principles of ecological gardening, she set about finding plants that would suit these very different, awkward situations. The gardens she made - the Mediterranean garden on the sunny slopes, the shady woodland garden, the damp garden for water-loving plants, the drier than dry gravel garden - have become legendary. In this book photographer Rachel Warne has traced all these different gardens through the course of a year.

She is the author of many books including her classics The Dry Garden (1978) and The Damp Garden (revised 2004) as well as Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden (2000) and Beth Chatto's Woodland Garden (2002). An engaging exchange of letters with Christopher Lloyd, Dear Friend and Gardener, was published in 1998.

In 2002 she was awarded the OBE for her services to horticulture. A keen advocate of organic gardening, she has lectured worldwide.

Spirit: Garden Inspiration: By Dan Pearson
picture
Features:-
Taking inspiration from art, sculpture, Chicago prairies and folk architecture such as tree houses, Dan Pearson--acclaimed garden designer and "green-fingered guru" at the U.K. newspaper The Observer--lays out his design philosophy and working process, giving readers direct insight into his collaborative approach of working with nature, instead of imposing preconceptions upon it. Journeying from New Zealand to Japan via Thames-side barge gardens, Pearson focuses on the spirit of place as it emerges through geography, history, architecture and native flora, extrapolating this sense of place into a new gardening philosophy. Very far from conventional gardening books, Spirit radically expands the genre, inviting us to understand the act of gardening in the light of contemporary needs and with a keen environmental awareness; Pearson particularly stresses the importance of skills such as being able to "read" a variety of landscapes (both wild and cultivated), and of staying open to what those landscapes suggest in terms of cultivation. This long-awaited publication is Pearson's first in eight years, and uses 400 of his own much-admired photographs as reference points. Dan Pearson began his career as a professional designer in 1987. He is co-author of The Essential Garden Book (with Sir Terence Conran) and author of The Garden: A Year at Home Farm. He has presented and appeared in several TV series and has designed five award-winning Chelsea Flower Show gardens.
