The Outsiders (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD]
picture
Features:-
Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular SE Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centres on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, The Outsiders nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane

The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration [DVD] [1972]
picture
Features:-
Collection of all three movies of the award-winning trilogy 'The Godfather', directed and co-written by Francis Ford Coppola and based on the successful novel by Mario Puzo. Beginning with 'The Godfather' (1972), in late 1940s New York, Mafia 'Godfather' Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) gathers his three sons around him for daughter Connie (Talia Shire)'s wedding; the hot-headed Sonny (James Caan), ineffectual Fredo (John Cazale) and war hero Michael (Al Pacino), who chooses to distance himself from the family 'business'. When Vito is shot and wounded for refusing to sanction a rival family's heroin sales on his territory, Sonny temporarily takes over and embarks on bloody gang warfare. This results in him being killed in an ambush, and Michael finds himself nominated to succeed the ailing Vito. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando) and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 'The Godfather: Part II' (1974), it is 1958 and Michael has now fully embraced the trappings of a mafia boss, leading to conflict with his wife, Kay (Diane Keaton). As he attempts to expand his crime empire, he thinks of his late father Vito's rise to power in New York during the 1920s, but all of Michael's attempts to emulate Vito and do the best for his family only pulls them further apart. Robert De Niro plays the young Vito in flashbacks to his early life. Both a prequel and sequel to the first movie, the film was nominated for eleven Oscars, winning five awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (De Niro). Finally, in 'The Godfather: Part III' (1990), it is 1979, and Michael donates $100 million to the Vatican as a signal that his family intend to go legitimate. Unfortunately, the hot-headed Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia), illegitimate son of Michael's late brother, Sonny, has taken an interest in both business affairs and Michael's daughter, initiating a violent and bloody power struggle. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, i...

The Way We Were [DVD] (1973)
picture
Features:-
A classic early 1970s weepie, The Way We Were stars Barbra Streisand as a Communist activist in the late 30s and 40s and Robert Redford as the ambitious young writer who marries her, cheats on her and eventually leaves her in the early days of McCarthyism for the sake of his Hollywood screenwriting career. Arthur Laurent's intelligent screenplay, remarkable performances from the two stars and Marvin Hamlisch's Oscar-winning score and theme song combined to produce a film that even as hostile a critic as Pauline Kael had to admit worked.

On the DVD: The DVD re-release includes the usual subtitling facilities, the theatre trailer and a documentary on the film's making, which includes one of the more political scenes deleted for commercial release; it is also possible to watch the film with a detailed commentary from Sydney Pollack about the problems of its making, problems which included writing new scenes so that Redford was not entirely upstaged by Streisand in the audience's sympathies. --Roz Kaveney

Jeepers Creepers [DVD] [2001]
picture
Features:-
With confident style and low-budget ingenuity, Jeepers Creepers gets under your skin, provoking spine-tingling horror when college siblings Trish (Gina Philips) and Darry (Justin Long) encounter a flesh-eating demon along a barren rural highway. After a harrowing car chase that sets the movies nerve-wracking tone, they investigate suspicious activity near an abandoned church, where a corrugated pipe leads to unimaginable horrors. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game against the regenerating demon, which feeds on fear--and selected body parts--according to a psychic (Patricia Belcher) who adds chilling portent to the routine climax in a besieged police station. Writer-director Victor Salva (Powder) emphasises primal fear over logic, but plot holes are easily forgiven when you're scared out of your socks. A surprise box-office hit in late summer 2001, Jeepers Creepers will please even jaded horror fans with its back-to-basics frights. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

On the DVD: Jeepers Creepers on disc shows off the dark tones and menacing shadows of this urban horror road movie to great oppressive effect in this anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 widescreen special edition. The schlock-horror soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and although the film predominantly relies on back-to-basics shock tactics, the audio track handles the balance of subtle dialogue and dramatic crescendos well. The DVD is also packed full of cultish extras. There are six featurettes, which add up to about an hour of documentary footage bringing together all the aspects of the production process from audition tapes, artwork, behind the scenes stuff and even a documentary on the film's two other "stars" the twins' 1960s Impala car, and the creeper's van. There is also a healthy spattering of deleted scenes an audio commentary by writer/director Victor Salva, trailers and a photo gallery. --Kristen Bowditch END
